What are Black Pipes and What are Their Uses?

by | Jan 29, 2023 | Black Pipe, Boiler, Tube | 0 comments

Black pipes look black, from appearance, this dark color comes from the iron-oxide formed on its surface during manufacturing. Black steel pipe refers to ordinary iron pipes and it is mainly used for gas lines. It is also used to connect equipment to their supply lines. These are the pipes used by businesses and residential homes to expel their natural gases or propane supplies.

Black steel pipes are also used for fire sprinkler systems because of their strong resistance to heat. They are usually held on by welding or by using a mechanical clutch. It can even be used as a replacement for galvanized pipes in projects for everything other than carrying water for drinking.

What are the differences between black pipes and galvanized pipes?

  1. Different layers: Black pipes are made of steel just like galvanized pipes. The difference is that galvanized pipes are coated with zinc, while black pipes are not.
  2. Different corrosion resistance: Black pipes have thin layers and will only provide a tiny bit of protection. Black pipes will easily rust if put outdoors while galvanized pipes will hardly rust at all.
  3. Different costs: Black pipe is cheaper than galvanized pipes and that is due to the extra zinc that is coated on galvanized pipes.
  4. Different applications: Black pipes are best used for gas lines. They are not so good for water lines because they rust quite easily. Galvanized pipes are not good for gas lines because the zinc can clog the lines when it starts to flake. Galvanized pipes are safer to use for water lines.
